TRAINING INTENTIONS - APPLICABILITY OF GST

Career pilot training programs are exempt from GST.

All programs taken after the Private Pilot Licence are considered to be Career Training programs, and are therefore exempt from GST. This includes ratings, such as the Night Rating, VFR-OTT, Multi-Engine rating, etc.

The Private Pilot Licence program is subject to GST, unless the student indicates that he/she is enrolling in the PPL program for the purpose of pursuing a career for which the PPL is a requirement. As the PPL is a pre-requisite of enrolling in the Commercial Pilot Licence program, the PPL program will be GST exempt, if you indicate your intention to pursue a career in aviation.

The Recreational Pilot Permit program is NOT a career training program, as it is NOT a pre-requisite to enrolling in the Commercial Pilot Licence program, nor does holding an RPP allow you to enroll in the CPL program. Therefore, the RPP program is NOT GST exempt.

If you ARE planning to pursue a career in aviation, and are therefore planning to enroll in the CPL program at some point in the future, you should enroll in the PPL program, rather than the RPP program, and indicate your career intentions below, so that your pilot training will be GST exempt.

If you are enrolled in the PPL program, there is nothing stopping you from obtaining your Recreational Pilot Permit along the way, should it make sense for you to do so.
